A cross-country spread is a production line that moves. Each gang has to find its equipment waiting for it, and a single missing item stops the gangs behind it. Pipe is strung along the right of way and positioned for the bending and welding gangs. Stands, supports and positioning equipment keep joints off the sand and at working height.
Cold field bends follow the profile of the ground. Internal mandrels support the wall through the bend; a bend indicator stops the operator over-bending a joint into scrap.
External chain clamps and internal line-up clamps hold the joint for the root pass. Welding habitats keep wind and sand off the arc.
Pre-heat and interpass temperature are procedure hold points. Propane torches, pin wheel heaters and induction heating cover the range of diameters and wall thicknesses.
The factory coating stops short of the weld. Tape, mastic, shrink sleeve and visco-elastic systems complete it, and the choice follows the line specification and the service temperature.
Holiday detection and dry film thickness readings are taken before the pipe leaves the right of way. Replica tape records the blast profile for the inspection file.
Cradles, belts and slings take the coated pipe into the trench without damaging the coating. Rollers and pushing rollers support it on the way.
Rockshield protects the coating from coarse fill. Cathodic protection connections are made before the trench closes.
Construction pigs clean and gauge the line; foam and urethane pigs follow. Test pumps and plugs take it to test pressure.
